WiMAX:
Interoperability and the Future of Wireless

At the onset of Wi-Fi, its purpose was to provide wireless access in a confined space by simulating a switch. This concept lead to the creation of numerous different wireless access point and client devices. Over time these products became interoperable, and their capabilities, including speed, increased. Presently, Wi-Fi devices are installed in virtually every phone, laptop and other electronics used in everyday life.

Due to its accessibility and positive functionality, Wi-Fi made giant strides in the field of networking. It provided mobility, flexibility, and a gateway between the capabilities of the internet and the people who use it. Last Mile wireless systems extended the reach of the internet to places that conventional DSL and Cable systems could not reach. While it made huge improvements, one of the drawbacks to a Wi-Fi based system is the issue of proprietary. This limitation forced people to think of other options, and if there was an even better way to use wireless. WiMAX addresses Wi-Fi's issue of priority, and created a standard for equipment use. The IEEE and the WiMAX forum set up a system that multiple manufacturers could work with, which allowed their systems to talk to one another and share networks. The major players in the industry embraced this concept and appreciated the interoperability of the new WiMAX equipment. This interoperability functionality is currently at a basic, best effort, level as set up by the standard. While it requires some advancements, it opens the possibility of using multiple manufacturers in a network.

In the future, this interoperability will increase due to current WiMAX capabilities. The compatibility of the mobile and fixed standards, plus further priority and feature-set expansion, will increase the ability of inter-manufacturer use. While it is important to choose the best solution for your situation, know that this can change and evolve over time. WiMAX is a standard that will make the system more flexible and increase both capability and revenue in the wireless last mile.
